Research project: Large-scale dynamics of greenhouse gas fluxes in lakes
Quantifying accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere has been considered essential for planning for a sustainable future under global climate changes. Although lakes occupy such a small fraction (less than 1%) of the Earth's surface, they are increasingly assumed to be critical components of GHG emission to the atmosphere, especially of important biogenic gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). In the LakePulse project, I will determine the concentrations and fluxes of CO2 and CH4 in a large number of lakes across different landscapes to assess factors affecting source and sink dynamics. In addition, I will use isotopic (13C) signatures of CO2 and CH4 to trace their origin and to estimate CH4 oxidation extent.
Specific aims of my project:
- Large-scale meta-analysis and mapping of lake fluxes across different landscapes to assess factors affecting source and sink dynamics of dominant greenhouse gases (CO2 & CH4)
- Tracing surface-water CO2 and CH4 origin and estimating CH4 oxidation extent using isotopic (13C) signatures of CO2 and CH4.
