As our Database Specialist, Jelena is developing the LakePulse database for storing data that are being collected by the field teams during the LakePulse Survey. The LakePulse database will also host different data sets: data provided by LakePulse partners, archived data and data regarding lake health from citizen science. Jelena is working on integrating these data sources into the LakePulse database and developing an interface for researchers, to access data through a Web Portal.

Jelena is interested in designing databases, data management/analysis/processing, programming and development. She is also interested in geospatial technology, providing solutions to data management and analysis.

Jelena is also a part-time Masters student in the Network contributing to the development of the LakePulse Web Portal and Stewardship Tools, which aim to provide automated lake health reports for tens of thousands of lakes across Canada.

Jelena helps to train and coordinate the Field Coordination team at the Université de Sherbrooke that receives all samples from the five field teams throughout the field season and that maintains daily contact with the field teams for logistical support. Jelena developed an electronic log sheet system for data collection in the field using tablets.

MSc research project: Development of the Web Portal and Stewardship Tools to provide automated lake health reports for lakes across Canada

This project will address the need for a comprehensive automated reporting catalogue for lakes. It will provide a location where users can find limnology data regarding lakes and watersheds, and thus public access to lake health information.

The project consists of several aspects:

  • Developing a GIS Web Portal that will present data from the LakePulse Survey, archived data and data collected by citizens.
  • The development of automated lake and watershed reports, as well as comparative reports.
  • Integration of algorithms for estimating and projecting values ​​of the impact on the health of the lakes.
  • Development of interactive tools for lake data visualisation.

The specific objectives of this project are to provide a window to understanding the current and future state of the health of Canadian lakes:

  • Display lake morphometry metrics and watershed characteristics for Canadian lakes.
  • Illustrate and show the values of water quality measurements collected during the LakePulse Survey, Partners' datasets, archived data and citizen science data.
  • Develop and integrate comparison algorithms for different variables within a region, ecozone and/or ecoprovince.
  • Develop "Assessment of health" algorithms using available variables.
  • Develop interactive visualization tools to establish and display the relationship between policy regulation and lake health variables.
